The story relates the difference in the two cultures of North America frontierrs, Canadian vs American and their respective treatment of the First Nations.
The American West was extremely violent while Canada's was relatively peaceful - for this time. The main characters include Sitting Bull - Grand Chief of the Sioux Nations in the North West Territories, Lieut.Gen. Phil Sheridan U.S. Army - who was given the responsibility of securing all Indian tribes into government controlled reservations. The Canadian west owes a debt of gratitute to Commissioner (NWMP) James Macleod-who with the help of Crowfoot Chief of the Blackfoot Nations managed to remove the threat of Indian wars from the North West Territories.
General Sherman went down in infamy for his 'the only good indian is a dead one!' a remark as abhorrent now as it was then to the Canadian scene.
This account (fictionalized but with real characters from our history) is a good read and recommended for 2008..
